The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent honors show approaches, one notices an outcry for the addition of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
